Orange whip cocktail with orange juice, rum, vodka, triple sec, and cream

Orange Whip

The Orange Whip is a cocktail named after a non-alcoholic orange juice drink from the 50s. The son of a man who worked for that drink company happened to be running craft services during the filming of the 1980s film The Blues Brothers, and as a favor to him, actor John Candy name-dropped the drink in an ad-libbed scene.

We were reminded of this classic when a Cocktail Party user wrote in and asked us to find the recipe (thanks, AY!) We didn’t have to look far – VinePair had a recipe for it that proved to be a huge hit when we tested it on our lab crew. It’s soft, fluffy, and oh-so-easy to drink.

We did make one small tweak: VinePair’s recipe called for heavy cream, which is quite rich (around 30% milkfat). We swapped in half-and-half, an American medium-fat cream (it comes in at around 14% milkfat). You can use heavy cream or medium cream as you prefer, but be aware that regular milk may curdle a bit, depending on how acidic your orange juice is.

Shake all ingredients with crushed, pebble or cube ice. Pour unstrained into a tall glass or goblet. Garnish with an orange wheel or wedge.
