Samarian Sunset

Ask for a Samarian Sunset in Ten Forward, and you’ll get a mysterious alien cocktail that changes color when the glass is tapped. Mixology legend Natasha David reworked the recipe with Terran ingredients, and the effect is nearly as lovely.

David’s recipe calls for Campari for the bitter orange apéritif, but Aperol is fine as well, if a bit sweeter.

Technique is important here, to keep the bright-red apéritif in the bottom of the glass, instead of mingling with the other colors of the drink. Start with the Campari or Aperol, top it with a big cube of ice, and slowly pour the other shaken ingredients over the ice so they float on top.

Pour the bitter citrus apéritif into a short glass, and top with ice (preferably one large cube). Shake the remaining ingredients and strain over the ice cube. Garnish with an orange wheel.
