Scofflaw

In 1923, a well-heeled Prohibitionist sponsored a $200 contest to come up with a word to describe “a lawless drinker of illegally-made or illegally-obtained liquor.” ‘Scofflaw’ won the contest, but by the next year it was the name of everyone’s favorite cocktail. Bartenders are historically a cheeky tribe, and this little story is a wonderful gem even if it isn’t true.

Ingredients
- 2 parts Rye whiskey
- 1 part Dry vermouth
- ½ part Lemon juice
- ¼ part Grenadine
- 1 dash Orange bitters
Instructions
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
