In 1923, a well-heeled Prohibitionist sponsored a $200 contest to come up with a word to describe “a lawless drinker of illegally-made or illegally-obtained liquor.” ‘Scofflaw’ won the contest, but by the next year it was the name of everyone’s favorite cocktail. Bartenders are historically a cheeky tribe, and this little story is a wonderful gem even if it isn’t true.
