Death From Above

Death From Above is a tiki-styled recipe from Thomas Waugh at Death & Co that makes use of three different styles of rum, each one adding a new layer of flavor and complexity. Even with the split rum base, sherry-enhanced sweetener, two bitters, and two garnishes, it still feels like a classic, refined Old Fashioned-style sipper.
Waugh calls for Lemon Hart 151 for the overproof rum, Scarlet Ibis for the dark or aged rum, and Cruzan Black Strap for the black rum. All of these are potent, flavorful choices – if you make substitutions, be sure they’re of similar mettle.

Ingredients
- 1 part Overproof aged rum
- ¾ part Dark rum or Aged rum or Demerara rum
- ¼ part Black rum
- 1 tsp Sweet sherry
- 1½ tsp Simple syrup
- 1 dash Aromatic bitters
- 2 dashes Orange bitters
Instructions
Stir all ingredients with ice until well-chilled. Strain into an ice-filled short glass. (preferably over one large ice cube). Garnish with a lemon twist and an orange twist.
