Despite its name, the Gingerly – from Boozehound author and spirits columnist Jason Wilson – isn’t actually all that gingery (gingerous? Gingeresque?)
Rather, the ginger liqueur plays a supporting note to the funky, malty flavors of genever, an older Dutch ancestor of today’s modern gin. Apple brandy, maraschino and lemon juice round it all out, resulting in a tart, elegant homage to an apple-ginger pie.
A ginger garnish goes far in upping spicy ginger flavors of the drink; a coin of fresh ginger on the rim is superb, as is a piece of candied ginger.
