The name must have been some sort of passive-aggressive dig at the Calvinist leaders of the early American Temperance movement, but there’s no real history to back up our supposition. In any event, it’s a lovely cocktail for whiskey drinkers who find a typical soda highball a bit too sweet.
Build in the order given in an ice-filled tall glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
