The Brown Diamond seems like it should be a vintage 1800’s recipe, with its classic, simple ingredient list: just rum, sherry, and ginger beer. In fact, it’s a more recent creation, from Florida restaurant owner Jenneffer Pulapaka.

Pulapaka uses Old Monk rum, a dark rum made in India and noted for its rich vanilla flavors. She also calls for Pedro Ximénez sherry, one of the richest and sweetest styles of sherry. This is a robust recipe, though, and will be delicious with any dark rum and sweet sherry combination you have at hand.

Wednesday was National Daiquiri Day here in the US, so our Cocktail of the Week is one of our favorite daiquiri riffs, the Scorpion Kick from Dan Greenbaum at the sadly-now-closed @diamondreef in Brooklyn, NY. It's one of the most refreshing variants of an already-quenching cocktail – and we really needed it here in Arizona, where most of the Cocktail Party team resides and temperatures are hitting a scorching 116º!

Piranha Punch

The Piranha Punch is the creation of mixologist Tiki Lindy (tikilindy), invented for her Halloween “SpookTiki” event. Recipe via the cocktailpartyapp website.

This is a mellow, fruity rum drink. It wouldn´t be out of place in an island resort, yet still manages to be balanced and engaging, with the Campari adding bitternes to compensate for all the other fruity notes. As expected from a Tiki Lindy drink, simple ingredients, interesting and easy drinking. (8,5/10)

2 parts Black rum or Demerara rum or Dark rum or Aged rum (I used a blended base of Bacardi 8 and Angostura 7)

½ part Falernum liqueur

¼ part Bitter citrus aperitif (Campari)

2 parts Guava nectar

¾ part Lemon juice

¼ part Grenadine

Shake all ingredients (except the grenadine) briefly with crushed ice. Pour unstrained into a tall glass or tiki mug. Top with more crushed ice and pour the grenadine over the ice.

We're suckers for any cocktail that melds tequila and orgeat; it's a killer combination. Tiffany Kirk at @miss_carousel in Houston manages to improve on perfection, adding Aperol to the mix and dusting the whole thing with a garnish of chile salt in her Dead Man's Handle.

The chile salt garnish is optional, but it adds a dimension of flavor that we heartily recommend. Kirk uses Tajín, a chile-lime-salt blend that you can find in the Mexican-foods section of most grocery stores – or you can whip up your own by stirring a bit of chile powder into some kosher salt. If you go that route, be sure to use chile powder that's just ground chiles, not the seasoned mix you might use to make a bowl of chili.
