This old cocktail has seen a few variations in its long life – it’s been made with Bénédictine, Drambuie, absinthe, and likely other herbal liqueurs.
We like Gaz Regan’s recipe from The Joy of Cocktails. He recommends starting with two dashes of Bénédictine, a sweet green herbal liqueur, and increasing to taste.

Ingredients
- 2 part Scotch
- 1 part Sweet vermouth
- 2 dashes Sweet herbal liqueur or Absinthe or Scotch whisky liqueur
Instructions
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a citrus twist.
