Recipes that call for sweet herbal liqueur are often referring to Bénédictine, a cognac-based liqueur with an herbal, slightly sweet flavor. Less-commonly, recipes may call for for Jägermeister, Becherovka, or another local favorite – we’ll call out the specifics in recipe notes, and let you know appropriate substitutes.
If you happen to be lucky enough to live in an area where your neighborhood monks still make sweetened liqueurs from the herbs and flowers around the monastery, you can (and absolutely should!) try those local variations in any of the recipes listed here.
